American Express and Uber Add New Uber Eats Perk for Some Cardholders
American Express and Uber announced a new offer to select cardholders on Monday. U.S. customers with a Platinum, Gold, or Green consumer credit card can receive a complimentary 12-month subscription to Uber Eats, the company’s food delivery service.
- American Express is offering a complimentary 12-month subscription to Uber Eats for cardholders with a U.S. Platinum, Gold, or Green consumer credit card.
- The American Express Gold Card will also offer up to $120 in Uber credits starting in 2021.
- The card issuer already offers up to $200 in Uber credits annually for its Platinum cardholders and also provides bonus rewards on dining, takeout, and delivery on its Gold and Green cards.
- This is yet another move by a major credit card issuer to adapt to changing consumer spending habits during the coronavirus pandemic.
Which Cardholders Qualify and What Do They Get?
American Express has been at the forefront of moves by the credit card industry to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and its effect on consumer spending patterns. The bank and card issuer has added additional perks to many of its Amex-branded cards and also some of the cards with co-branded partners, including Delta, Hilton, and Marriott.
With this latest benefit, U.S. cardholders with a Platinum, Gold, or Green consumer credit card will get a complimentary Eats Pass membership through Uber Eats for up to 12 months. The monthly subscription offers unlimited $0 delivery fees on restaurant orders, 5% off restaurant orders over $15, and, in select markets, $0 delivery fees on grocery deliveries.
The membership normally costs $9.99 per month, making the benefit worth roughly $120. To take advantage of the promotion, you need to enroll by Dec. 31, 2021. Note that the benefit is not available with Platinum, Gold, or Green business credit cards.
In addition to this perk, cardholders with an American Express Gold Card will soon get an additional new benefit. Early next year—Amex didn’t provide a date—customers with the card will receive $10 per month in Uber Cash (up to $120 annually), which they can use on either Uber Eats orders or Uber rides in the U.S.
That perk is in addition to the $120 annual dining credit (also up to $10 per month), which cardholders can get when they spend with Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth's Chris Steak House, Boxed, and participating Shake Shack locations.
Pros and Cons of the Amex-Uber Offer
According to a survey conducted by Amex, 50% of consumers have ordered takeout and delivery more often during the pandemic than before. So, this offer can help eligible cardholders save money on purchases they’re already making.
The potential drawback is that the promise of reduced fees and discounts could cause some cardholders to spend money on food delivery when they wouldn’t have otherwise.
Cardholders should also note that after the 12-month free period ends, their card will be automatically billed at the then-current Eats Pass subscription price each month unless they opt out.
Even if you don’t plan on using Uber Eats often, though, having that option with reduced costs should be appealing if you have an eligible card.
In addition to the Eats Pass benefit, adding a $120 annual Uber Cash perk for Amex Gold Card holders will make an even stronger case for giving it the title of best dining credit card. The perk will complement the already existing dining credit and its 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide.
