‘I went from making £600 a day to a £1m business I do in my shed’
Woman makes $19,000 thanks to party side hustle
One man is sharing how he was able to turn his lockdown side hustle into a £1million business.
Liam Mchale-Smith, 33, from Cheshire, started making his own furniture after the Covid-19 pandemic prevented him from working his construction job.
Prior to starting this side hustle, the former construction worker was earning around £600 per week.
His partner Ruth Barkin, 32, posted pictures of the furniture he created on social media which led to people enquiring about purchasing it.
Three years since Ms Mchale-Smith started this new venture, it is now a legitimate business which has turned over £1million.

The businessman explained: “I’m very proud and really pleased that a hobby has made me over a million.
“I really never thought something like this would happen to me. I have no experience of running a business or being the boss.
“But I wouldn’t go back to being employed now. I love being the CEO, I’m just glad Ruth is great with computers and social media.
“It was amazing from the start, and so unexpected. Home became almost impossible to live in because I just kept needing to expand my workspace.”

Starting out, the first two furniture items he created were a wall-mounted garden bar and a radiator cover.
Once Mr Mchale-Smith’s side hustle was off the ground, his business Unique Design by Liam opened its own Etsy store and delivered furniture across the country.
According to the entrepreneur, the business turned over £60,000 and by the end of last year had a turnover of £1million.
His team now produce 40 furniture items a day which are all handmade from locally sourced materials.
Mr Mchale-Smith explained: “In particular I enjoy providing help and working for local companies and charities.
“But it is very hard work. I can’t take a week off like I used to, so it has a huge impact on our home life.”
Ms Brankin added: “It just blew up out of nowhere, we really didn’t expect it. It’s lovely that we never have to use credit anymore. And we didn’t take any business loans.
“We can buy a holiday now whereas once we’d have saved for months. But the success is very much deserved. I don’t know anyone who works as hard as Liam – he’s unique, and such an inspiration to others.”
