‘This is a scam!’ National Insurance warning as Britons told ‘number will be cancelled’

The primary goal of most of these phone scams is to convince their marks to part ways with their personal information and money. In response to the growing rise of these fraudulent endeavours during the COVID-19 pandemic, HMRC has set out to educate the public on securing their safety and security from these scams. However on Twitter, many Britons are reporting that they are continuing to receive phone scams which are telling them their National Insurance number is in jeopardy.

One Twitter user said: “I just had a phone call in the UK saying my National Insurance number was about to be canceled due to “unethical purchases.

“This is a scam! No one can cancel your National Insurance Number. Beware of scammers. Stay safe.”

Another account added: “I just had a phone call … threatening to cancel my National Insurance because I had been ‘involved in fraudulent activities’.

“The eastern sounding person who spoke to me put the phone down when I suggested he indulge in carnal knowledge with himself.”

“Looks like the National Insurance phone call scam is doing the rounds again,” said one account.

“Twice today. Obviously not a problem here, but these calls are using ‘threatening legal action’ wording which some may take as genuine. Be aware.”

In reaction to the calls, another Twitter user warned other Britons as to how the call appears and what to look out for.

He explained: “This is worth paying attention. Beware of any dangerous phone calls regarding your National Insurance number.

“These are scams. I had an automated phone call earlier saying it would suspend your NI number if you made unethical financial transactions.”

On the Government website, HMRC outlined the growing rise in phone phishing scams and gave examples of what people should look out for if they were ever to receive such a call.

The Government body said: “HMRC is aware of an automated phone call scam which will tell you HMRC is filing a lawsuit against you, and to press 1 to speak to a caseworker to make a payment.

“We can confirm this is a scam and you should end the call immediately. This scam has been widely reported and often targets elderly and vulnerable people.

“Other scam calls may refer to National Insurance number fraud or offer a tax refund and request you to provide your bank or credit card information.

“If you cannot verify the identity of the caller, we recommend that you do not speak to them.”

HMRC is also pushing people to call Action Fraud if they have been the victim of or lose money to a National Insurance phone scam.

In order to help with Action Fraud and HMRC’s investigation into any potential scam, Britons must be prepared to share specific details about the call on a reporting form.

These details include: the date of the call, date of the call, the phone number used and the content of the call.

Similar scams including phishing emails, fake text messages and fraudulent Whatsapp messages, which the public should all look out for.

What to remember:

HMRC will never phone, text or email anyone to ask for bank details or to tell you to transfer money.

HMRC will never ask you to pay for any apparent and alleged costs with gifts or payment vouchers.

HMRC will not leave threatening texts or voicemail messages asking you to call them back or pushing legal action.

HMRC will only call you to ask about a claim or payment on a debt that you already know about.

In regards to any National Insurance you may face in the future, your number will never expire so therefore will never be cancelled.
