Millions of iPhone owners warned of sneaky new trick fraudsters can use to empty bank accounts | The Sun

IPHONE owners have been warned one of the new features on iOS could be the perfect trick for fraudsters.

Live Voicemail reads out a transcript of the call in real-time, so you can decide whether to pick up or not.

But thieves could abuse the tool to panic people into answering, an expert has told ABC7.

Instead of going through to voicemail giving you time to think about whether it's a scam or not, alarming wording could appear on screen prompting you to take the call.

A sense of urgency is one of the key tactics used by criminals.

"Normally what happens when a scammer leaves a voicemail, you can look at the voicemail and decide over time is this a scam or is this real," Alex Quilici, chief executive of YouMail explained.

"Now as the call's coming in, they're saying, 'Hey, we're about to transfer $2,000 out of your account, press one if this is an error otherwise, we'll let it go through.'

"They create a sense of urgency as you are reading the transcribed message, which gets people to pick up, thinking it's their bank, when it's not."

Live Voicemail is one of a number of big new features to arrive on iOS 17.

It's switched on by default but you can turn it off if you would prefer.
